San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2013 -- The new year is traditionally the time of the year when just about everyone promises themselves to eat better, workout more, try harder, and just do better. It turns out that some may want to skip the weight bench and hit the treadmill if you want to see the best results and stick with your resolution with the most success.

Researchers from Duke University have been examining the impact of aerobic and resistance training work on the body and fat mass in overweight individuals. The researchers focused on the effects of losing weight via both styles and found that aerobic exercise does enjoy a bit of an edge of resistance.

"If you're overweight, it's good to lose fat and body weight," Dr. Leslie Willis, an exercise physiologist at Duke and lead author of the study, said of aerobic exercise. "Spend time doing cardio training if that's your main goal."

She also noted that she is not trying to make the claim that resistance training does not have benefits, or is in any way a bad thing, as long as it is done properly and with quality guidance. Instead, it is simply a bit lacking when compared to the aerobic endeavors.

The study was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, and followed 234 adults who spanned the ages 18-70, all of whom were overweight or obese. These individuals participated in a eight-month program (one of three variation) that consisted of aerobic, resistance, or a combination of the two.

Of those groups, those with aerobic training and combination groups saw the most quality weight loss. Those who were involved in the resistance-only group saw less weight loss. However, it should be noted that some of the reason for those results is due to the fact that they gained more muscle mass while not burning as much fat. In other words: resistance only equals bulking.

Clearly the group with both styles was the healthiest group, as they toned muscle while also losing fat through aerobic workouts.
