Amoxicillin Antibiotic for Dogs Side Effects

Repost This

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/08/2014 -- Amoxicillin is antibiotic commonly used in animals to treat and prevent bacterial infections. It is one of the penicillin antibiotics that kill bacteria by attacking their protective cell wall. One advantage is that it kills a wide range of bacteria compared to some antibiotics that are limited to killing a limited number. Bacteria that typically infect the upper respiratory tract, bladder, mouth and wounds are usually susceptible to amoxicillin.

It is also prescribed to cats and dogs immediately after a dental exam or other surgery to prevent infection. Sometimes if the animal is at high risk of an infection, treatment will be started before the procedures.

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and a decreased appetite. Animals can have an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin. It can interact with other antibiotics and antacids. To increase the number of bacteria it can kill, amoxicillin is combined with clavulanic acid (Clavamox®). It comes in tablets and powder. Once water is added to the powder, it must be kept in the refrigerator and is good for two weeks. For the drug to be fully effective against an infection, it has to be given for seven to 10 days.
