Illinois hotel customer claims she was blamed for infestation
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2012 -- A woman says she was kicked out of an Illinois hotel after she reported bed bugs in her room. Bernie Richardson told WREX, Channel 13, that she moved into the Lafayette Hotel in Rockford, Ill., four weeks ago. Soon she started noticing insect bite marks.
“I would have bite marks all on my neck and all on my arms and my legs,” Richardson told the television station.
To prove her case, she had a plastic bag containing two live bed bugs. “I actually pulled my sheets back and I saw this bug,” Richardson said.
Richardson said she notified the hotel management, but that her complaint met with denials and then accusations from hotel staff.
“She came in with a flashlight, shined it on the mattress and she told me there was no bed bugs,” Richardson said. “She told me, You probably brought the bed bugs in with you.’”
The hotel owner says the Lafayette never has had bed bug problems.
Richardson said an exterminator came to her room at 7 a.m. and told her she had to go. Soon, she had vacated to room, with her clothes packed in garbage bags.
“It was just the worst thing ever. I’m just devastated by it,” she told WREX. “They just actually kicked me out like I was nobody.”
The hotel owner, however, disputes Richardson’s account. The owner said Richardson was not kicked out and was refunded rent for one week.
