Chicago city is all set to become the first American city that will ban electronic cigarette in public places
Austin, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/03/2013 -- Chicago city is all set to ban the usage of electronic cigarette at all the public places where regular cigarettes are banned. Chicago and New York could become the first major cities to enact law regarding the use of electronic cigarettes in public places. The ban is supported by Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, different local elected officials and numerous public health groups.
A subcommittee of Chicago city council will study the proposal regarding the ban on electric cigarette anywhere where the use of tobacco cigarette and its products is prohibited. The proposal will be studied by a Council subcommittee and then put up for a vote in December. Chicago Health Commissioner Dr. Bechara Choucair says, “The proposed ban would amend an existing ordinance regulating tobacco use in public spaces”.
If this bill is passed, it would go into effect sometime in January says Dr. Bechara Choucair. Moreover ban on selling of flavored tobacco products within 500 feet of schools would also go into effect within six months of passage. This ban will also cover a ban on the sales and purchase of smokeless cigarettes by minors.
In addition to it, the retailer will also need to apply for a sales license to sell e cig products. Like regular tobacco products they could only be sold from behind the counter. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilman James Gennaro says, “allowing e cigarettes in places where tobacco cigarettes are banned threatens "effective enforcement" of the smoking ban and sends the wrong message to children that smoking is safe”.
