Super Trawler Margiris All Set to Go fishing in the Waters of Tasmania
Carrum, VIC -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/11/2012 -- Super Trawler Margiris, which is owned by a Dutch company, finally received a green signal to fish in Australian waters. According to the reports, environmental minister Tony Burke, has given the go ahead to the super trawler to fish in Australian waters. However, it has to accept some conditions in order to protect ocean life.
The 142-meter super trawler arrived in Australia last week where it faced huge protests and demonstrations from environmental activists, which suggested that the Dutch-owned Margiris would not be able to fish in the waters of Tasmania.
However, the controversial super trawler has now been given a green signal to go out fishing under the conditions applied by the environmental minister Tony Burke.
'The conditions I have developed will require the super trawler to adopt the world's best practice methods for avoiding listed species, particularly seals, dolphins and sea birds, from being killed or injured during its trawling operations. I want to ensure that the environmental impact is no more than if not the same quota as if being fished by a smaller vessel.'' – says Burke according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The reason for the sudden protests from the environmental activists was because they wanted to minimize the danger of hurting ocean life. Considering the fact that the Dutch-owned super trawler is the largest trawler to operate in the waters of Australia it was expected that the trawler could cause serious environmental damage.
