Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/11/2014 -- Cefovecin (Convenia®) is an injectable antibiotic that is given under the skin used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is a newer drug that belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins and kills bacteria by preventing them from making their cell wall. The bacteria targeted are strains of Streptococcus and Staphylcoccus, Pasteurella multocida, E. coli urinary tract infections, Proteus urinary tract infections in dogs and Fusobacterium in cats.
Many of these bacteria are present in soft tissue wounds and abscesses, so cefovecin is the antibiotic of choice when a dog or cat presents with infected wounds. It is readily absorbed in the body and stays in the body for over two weeks. It is a very safe drug in animals. Neurotoxicity occurs in humans at high doses, but that has not been observed in cats and dogs. Animals that have allergies to other cephalosporins should not be given this drug. Studies in male rats suggest that male dogs should not be bred for three months after an injection.
