More than 100 properties affected by floodwaters
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/07/2012 -- More than 100 residences and businesses were affected by floodwaters that resulted from heavy rain in the Cornwall area of the United Kingdom on November 25.
Cornwall, a seaside community which is located at the southwestern tip of England and bordered to the north and west by the Celtic Sea to the and south by the English Channel, had endured several inches of heavy rain, which led to the Cober River to breach its banks.
As of publication date, the Cornwall Council reported that 114 properties had been flooded as a result of the storm.
Millbrook, Mevagissey, Polperro, Newlyn, Perranporth, and Trenear near Helston were among the hardest hit areas of Cornwall, with Mevagissey getting the brunt of the flooding on Saturday evening.
County highways department spokesman Paul Allen said officials were assessing the damage caused to the county's main roads. However, an "ever-decreasing highways maintenance budget" made the damage assessment somewhat difficult.
The fire service said it received 520 calls, during the weekend and involved all its 31 stations in the county, making it the busiest weekend on record.
Ship Inn in Mevagissey landlord Tony Gibb said his establishment had been flooded six times in the past several weeks.
"As usual, it was a slow flood from the internal drains," Gibb said. "We very rarely get the water in through the doors."
Over the weekend, several homes in Cawsand, Kingsand, and Millbrook on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall were flooded as well.
John Shepherd, a resident from Cawsand, said, "There are some houses that have been flooded two or three times in as many years."
Rail service was also affected by the heavy rain and winds as buses had to be called in to replacing some train services between Exeter and Yeovil and Exeter and Bristol.
After a tree fell on the branch line between Falmouth Docks and Truro, a bus service was employed.
