Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/22/2016 -- US navy researchers are conducting tests with the intentions of growing sustainable gardens using hydroponics on submarines. This is because currently three-month deployments are taking fresh produce which lasts them a mere ten days. If the new project works out as it is anticipated to do so, soon deployed sailors will be able to grow and enjoy fresh vegetables for their entire durations, instead of relying on frozen alternatives.

Don Holman is the engineering technician at the forefront of this experiment and is currently growing vegetables in a 40ft container, using hydroponics to ensure maximum control. So far 83 varieties of vegetables have been tested, 51 of which have been successful – including kale, lettuce and a number of root vegetables. The main challenge will be to scale down the garden to fit on submarines with limited space, but it could happen, we will all just have to wait and see.

A spokesperson from Grown Up Hydroponics was keen to comment saying, "We don't know whether this is going to happen, but it could, don't forget that that last year NASA grew lettuce in space. Access to fresh fruits and vegetables is vital and this is why we urge people to grow hydroponically where possible as this growing method ensures the highest quality produce at all times."
