Marcasite is an attractive mineral which is used to make wide variety of jewelry. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure and is physically and crystallographically distinct from pyrite although they have the same chemical formula. Marcasite can be difficult to distinguish from pyrite due to lack of existence of crystal habit. Marcasite is lighter and more brittle than pyrite and has a pale yellow to almost white color and a bright metallic luster. It can be formed as both primary and secondary mineral and it generally forms under low temperature and highly acidic conditions. As a primary mineral it occurs in sedimentary rocks such as shales, limestones and low grade coals. As a secondary mineral it forms by chemical alteration of a primary mineral such as pyrrhotite or chalcopyrite. It is commonly associated with dolomite, fluorite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, galena, sphalerite and calcite. Marcasite is inherently unstable under atmospheric conditions. It reacts more readily than pyrite under high humid conditions and produces iron sulfate and sulfuric acid as a result of disintegration. The disintegration of pyrite is known as "pyrite decay" and is a major problem for conservators involved in geological collections. Low humidity can prevent or slow down the reaction.

Polyimide fibers have been in mass production since 1955. Polyimide fibers have a high heat-resistance and enjoy diverse roles in applications demanding rugged organic materials, e.g. high temperature fuel cells and displays. In addition, polyimide fibers are a class of polymers notable for chemical, wear and radiation resistance. Polyimide fibers can be prepared by various means. Polyimide fibers are commercially prepared by a chemical reaction between a dianhydride and a diamine or a reaction between a dianhydride and a diisocyanate. Polyimide fibers are also inherently resistant to flame combustion and do not usually need to be mixed with flame retardants. Thermoset polyimide fibers exhibit high tensile strength and low creep. In addition, molded polyimide parts have very good heat resistance. Normal operating temperatures for such parts and laminates range from cryogenic to those exceeding 500 °F (260 °C). According to the composition of their main chain, polyimide fibers can be: alphatic, semi aromatic and aromatic. According to the type of interactions between the main chains, polyimide fibers can be: thermosetting or pseudothermoplastic.

Polyisoprene elastomers are synthetic polymers that resemble natural rubber in molecular structure as well as in properties. Synthetic polyisoprene has a lower percentage of cis-1,4 polyisoprene units. Manufacturing polyisoprene with the desired properties is a complex process: the polymerization of isoprene can lead to various repeating units. Different types of polyisoprene are 1,2 - polyisoprene, trans 1,4 polyisoprene, cis-1,4 - polyisoprene and 3,4 polyisoprene. Several different processes can be used to manufacture polyisoprene. Ziegler-Natta polymerization allows trans 1,4 polyisoprene, cis 1,4 - polyisoprene, and 3,4 - polyisoprene to be custom made. This type of polymerization is the most widely used process to produce polyisoprene having significant cis-1,4 content. Polyisoprenes, both natural (from trees) and synthetic are noted for, resistance to tear and abrasion, excellent elasticity, outstanding resilience and flex fatigue resistance. Polyisoprenes elastomers have superior tensile strength characteristics and are operable in low temperature environments. Polyisoprenes elastomers are not recommended for petroleum, ozone, high heat, sunlight, or hydrocarbon environments. Synthetic polyisoprene exceeds the natural polyisoprene type in processing, consistency of product, cure rate and purity. In addition, it is superior in extrusion, mixing, calendering and molding processes.

Silica fiber is a long thin thread made of sodium silicate. Silica fibers are the dominating material in fiber optics due to their excellent properties and characteristics. Silica fibers have superior mechanical strength against bending and pulling, provided that the fiber is not very thick and that the surfaces are well prepared. In addition, cleaving and fusion splicing of silica fibers works fairly well. The mechanical strength of silica fibers can be further improved with a suitable polymer jacket. Silica fibers can be used as reinforcements in polymer, metal and ceramic matrices. The high strength-to-weight and modulus-to-weight (i.e., stiffness-to-weight) ratios of the silica fibers allow the fabrication of composite materials that are superior in physical properties to much heavier homogeneous metal materials. In addition, silica fibers are chemically very stable as compared to other materials.

Silver amalgam is a mixture of mercury, silver, tin and copper and used for dental applications. Amalgams are generally crystalline in structure with the exception of those with high mercury content which are liquid. Some of the important characteristics of an amalgam are dimensional change, compression strength, flow and creep. The dimensional change characteristics deal with an amalgams ability to expand and contract depending on its use. The compression strength characteristic is the ability of amalgams to resist fracture which is an important prerequisite for any restorative materials. The strength of silver amalgam depends on the composition of the alloy.
