New York City, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2013 -- A new play by New York director David Watson entitled “How Now, Hamlet” has been chosen as an audience favorite and will extend performances into the final weekend of the 7th Annual Aery Theater Festival's short play competition. The six-character play, which Watson also directed, had its premiere upstate at the festival in Garrison, New York on September 7, 2013, and is on track to be eligible for prizes as Best Play, as well as for Best Actor and Best Director.
The play takes place in the wings of an off-Broadway production of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet,” and focuses on the deteriorating personal relationship between the actor playing Hamlet and the actress playing Ophelia. “It requires a very fine sense of pace from the actors,” says Watson, who also the director of this production, “because the Shakespeare text and the dialogue ‘offstage’ need to be carefully synchronized. In some ways, it was more like conducting a choral work than a straightforward play.” The New York cast includes Adam Weppler, Kathryn Connors, Alice Bahlke, Monique Sanchez, Sean Griffin, and Michelle Snyder. KJ Morton is the production stage manager. “How Now, Hamlet” was produced for the festival by Strut & Fret, Inc.
Tickets for the semi-finals performance on Friday, September 13 at 8:00 p.m. are available at Brown Paper Tickets.com. A limited number of tickets for the award round on Sunday afternoon, September 15 are also available.
