Today the European Parliament will make a ruling on whether or not to classify the e cigarette as medication. Pro e cigarette views ado not want it to be passed as member states are of the mind that it will be the best thing for everyone.
Austin, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2013 -- Today the e cig faces the first of a series of decisions with the EU ruling on whether or not to allow them to be categorized as medication or not. If passed this would mean they would be under the same regulatory authority that regulates the medical industry in the whole 28 member European Union. What is known is that with the US looking to introduce its own regulations for the e cig by the end of October, it is paying close attention to the ruling in Brussels.
However it must be noted that at this point there is no proof of the effectiveness of e cigarettes in tobacco cessation instead there is a rather growing trend with users that can claim they have either managed to cut down the number of tobacco products that they use. Thus if this ruling goes through it means that one of the most prominent features of the e cig industry i.e. the rate of innovation that has enabled it to continue to be at the fore front of innovation and in touch with its users, this will be severely restricted. This is because each and every level of development will be delayed such as the introduction of new flavors, new designs will need there will be a requirement to get regulatory approval thus retarding the ongoing pursuit for the best e cig.
As a result of this ruling the stock market is poised to either take a loss upon the passing of the ruling or to make gains on the wave of a possible rejection of the ruling. There have been warnings from major electronic cigarette brands for their investors to trade their shares with caution and restraint. But what is beyond doubt is that even whichever way the ruling goes, the e cig will continue to the smoking alternative of choice for smokers. There have been instances where even doctors would suggest e cigarettes and no physician would ever consider prescribing cigarettes, and this tacit gentleman’s agreement will likely make regulations more difficult and the e cigarette industry more profitable.
The current FDA state on e cigarettes is that they "have not been studied," in terms of safety for reducing smoking for intended use, and to date it only regulates vapor cigarettes that are marketed for therapeutic use. And with renewed advertising on TV for e cigs the demand can only increase this is after 42 years since legislation banned TV advertising for cigarettes, but has yet to apply that to the e cig.
