San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/04/2012 -- After “Cars 2” was shutout in its Oscar bid in 2011, Pixar is looking to score a hat-trick at the 2012 awards ceremony with its upcoming feature Brave.

“Cars 2” was unable to earn an Oscar win last year, snapping a decade-long domination by the company in the most celebrated entertainment award ceremony. While “Cars 2” did well at the box office and in merchandising, the company could not have been too happy with the loss in its usual dominant domain.

The company could be in store for three nominees for animated feature Oscar, including “Frankenweenie”, which arrives on October 5, and “Wreck It Ralph”, which will open in early November.

Having three movies in the running this year would match 2002, which saw “Treasure Planet”, “Lilo and Stitch”, and winner “Spirited Away”.

The competitions for this year’s awards from outside brands are less stiff than years in the past. DreamWorks’ “Madagascar” was not given a nod from the voters. Aardman Animation missed the nomination mark with “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” that was distributed by Sony.

Laika’s comic-based stop-motion feature “ParaNorman” had solid reviews but did not bring viewers back to the successes of “Coraline.”

Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania” has been receiving a mix of good and bad reviews, but may still be in the running. “Rise of the Guardians”, which features a Avenger-like teaming of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy, has some fans rumbling for a possible dark horse at the Oscars.

However, the animated feature spoils may go to the GKIDS’ “A Cat in Paris”, “Chico & Rita” and “The Secret of Kells”. These hand-drawn features have an adult appeal, while honoring the commonly held nostalgia the old form of animation. The movies may not garner the merchandising and general-public appeal of other animated films. They can, however, attract nominations for highbrow voters.

Expect at least one of the Disney trio to be placed in the nominations. But the company will be hoping for a trifecta come the big night.
