The Council for Compulsive Gambling New Jersey

Dr. Alyssa N. Wilson, PhD, Presents Techniques for Treating Problem Gambling at CCGNJ's 35th Conference

Hamilton, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/15/2017 -- The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) held their 35th Annual Statewide Conference in September. Each year, the CCGNJ invites professionals from all fields - primarily, those that work with gambling or gambling disorder treatment - to share their experiences and learn from each other. To cap off their conference, the CCGNJ invited Dr. Alyssa N. Wilson, PhD, to be the plenary speaker.

In her presentation, "Using Acceptance and Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Disordered Gambling," Dr. Wilson spoke of her own research at the Saint Louis University Gambling Addictions research laboratory, which she founded. She currently works as the director of the university's Applied Behavioral Analysis program. There, she teaches and directs graduate students as they research gambling disorders.

During her session, she indicated that certain kinds of behavioral therapy have proven effective in helping problem gamblers cope with their urges. Staying in the moment can make them more aware of the things or situations that trigger these impulses, which assists them in altering their behavior and ultimately recovering, said Dr. Wilson.

"This year, we chose the theme, 'The New Frontier on Gambling Treatment,' focusing on new developments in the treatment of people struggling with gambling disorders," said Neva Pryor, Executive Director of the CCGNJ. "In our efforts to spread awareness and provide gambling problem help, we strive to use the latest, most effective research, like Dr. Wilson's findings."

The CCGNJ thanks all conference participants for helping to make it such an enriching experience. As they prepare for next year's conference, they will continue to offer support and treatment for anyone looking for help with disordered illegal sports gambling in Monmouth, NJ, or any other gambling problem.
