San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2013 -- While a laptop bag can somewhat protect a computer from the elements, it could also be a bullseye to nefarious characters, such as muggers.

Students who have late-night study sessions, dragging tech devices around campus might not be the most ideal scenario. Drexel University in Philadelphia has an interesting solution to this particular problem, as it has installed a MacBook vending machine in its library, according to VentureBeat.

The machine literally dispenses laptops that are on loan 24 hours per day. That way, students can access technology easier, and not have to worry about carrying the laptop to and from their home (if it indeed is too cumbersome or they are afraid of thieves).

The vending machine is available to students who present their ID cards. Students are able to borrow the laptops for fives hours per payment, and a late fee for those who fail to bring the laptop back start at $5. The machine holds 12 MacBooks as of now. Laptops that are inside that machine are both charged and have their hard drive wiped clean for safety purposes.

Drexel University released a statement regarding the machine.

“Libraries are not only meant to house books,” Dean of Drexel University Libraries Dr. Danuta A. Nitecki, said in a statement.

"This was a great opportunity to match a specific student need with library staff's ongoing exploration of cutting edge technologies. We expect the resulting initiative to improve the Drexel student’s academic experience," Nitecki said

There have been MacBook and iPad vending machines in the past, so the idea is not wholly new. Some of these machines offer computer gadgets on loan, while others sell them outright. Macys sells products from Apple through machines at select stores across the country. But while there are many libraries that allow for laptop rentals, the process is usually handled by the staff.
