Advocates urge FDA to not place harsh regulations
Great River, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/04/2013 -- Electronic cigarettes are making headlines all over the country awaiting the regulations the Food and Drug Administration will be putting into play for the device. This has become a heated topic amongst anti-smoking groups and e-cigarette advocates. E-cigarette advocates have been speaking up regarding the regulations in question.
The FDA will be deciding to place an age restriction on the device and decide if this will be treated as a tobacco product. However, many e-cigarette advocates are worried about these regulations. The regulation to place an age restriction is fully supported by e-cigarette advocates, manufacturers, and retailers, but it is the other aspect that worries them.
With so many traditional smokers making the switch to electronic cigarettes, they do not want to see the FDA group the e-cig in with the tobacco cigarette. One e-cigarette user spoke out to say, “I do not want to be thrown outside with the cigarette smokers if they place the ban on electronic cigarettes being used in public places. I made the healthier choice to switch to electronic cigarettes and do not want to be forced to breathe in secondhand smoke.”
Many agree with this notion. Why force an e-cigarette user to inhale second hand smoke when non-tobacco smokers have the bans in place to protect them.
Others in the medical field have voiced their opinion on the matter. Many fear that placing heavy restrictions e-cigarettes will hamper the good electronic cigarettes are trying to accomplish.
E-cig advocates are expressing their appreciation for electronic cigarettes by making testimonies to the city councils and writing letters to the FDA. These advocates are traditional tobacco smokers that have tried numerous times to quit smoking, but were never successful until making the switch to electronic cigarettes.
The FDA has given out government grants to VCU and SciMetrika to conduct 5 years of study and research for tobacco products and included electronic cigarettes in that category. The FDA’s is set to place regulations on electronic cigarettes by the 31st of this month.
