Pilot Program Helps Get High School Seniors Ready for College, Employment
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/31/2012 -- The 2nd Education Matters Career Prep. Conference was recently held at Catawba Valley Community College and nearly 130 high school seniors from three local counties were in attendance.
The high school seniors present at the event were selected as sophomores to participate in the pilot program back in 2010. This year the hand-picked students met in the Multipurpose Complex at the Community College to brush up on skills that could help them after graduation as part of the half-day event.
Director of Education Matters in Catawba County Tracy Hall said, “This is an opportunity for high school seniors who have been a part of the Education Matters pilot group to meet with our business community and learn what it takes to get a career in our area.”
Hall worked with other education directors in 2010 to pick the students that participated in last week’s conference. She said the selection process included a variety of students, both male and female, high achievers and students with a broad array of program interests.
Students role-played mock interviews and got tips from local human resource workers about what businesses are looking for in new employees, including the importance of clear communication and interpersonal skills in the workplace was key.
Students attending the conference began to assemble a robust portfolio that would help them in both academic and work applications. Such items included a resume, cover letter, career goals, complete with awards and accolades earned, as well as extra-curricular interests. The portfolio will be completed before the seniors graduate next summer.
Hall said that every student enrolled in Catawba County would be able to attend upcoming Career Prep conferences, as well as participate in Career Readiness Certification (CRC). Every student graduating in high school in the county will complete both a high school diploma as well as receive CRC certification, starting in 2015.
