Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/14/2014 -- Deracoxib (Deramaxx®) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that also provides pain relief. The drug works by inhibiting the actions of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), an enzyme that promotes the processes that cause pain and inflammation when tissue is injured. It differs from other NSAIDs in that it strongly inhibits COX-2 at low concentrations for 24 hours. It is given to dogs that have arthritis and undergo orthopedic and dental surgery. For surgery, a veterinarian may prescribe Deracoxib hours before a surgical procedure and then afterwards to manage pain.
Deracoxib also acts on COX-1, a similar enzyme, which acts to protect the stomach lining and kidneys. Its actions on COX-1 can lead to stomach pain and ulcers. Other side effects are having diarrhea, tarry, black or bloody stools, and changes in activity level, aggression and seizures. Jaundice, pale gums, drinking more water and changes in urination, decreased appetite, seizures and skin irritation and allergic reaction are other side effects dogs could experience on deracoxib.
Many of the side effects are the result of getting an overdose. The drug should be stopped right away if side effects seen and they should see a veterinarian immediately.Cosequin Do not mix with other NSAIDs and steroids. Deracoxib should not to be used in cats.
