Tel Aviv metropolis is Israel's economic engine, contributing over US$131 billion, or 54%, of the country's GDP in 2012. Innovation is an important part of Tel Aviv's development, which drives the city's labour productivity and brings new comforts to its urban life, such as free citywide wifi or the anticipated world's first SkyTran system. Rapid development has enabled the city's economy to absorb its healthy population expansion, amounting to nearly 2% per year over 2007-2012.
