Competitor admits it’s tough to maintain a normal life when in competition
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/22/2012 -- As Diana Dumas will tell you, often the hardest part about bodybuilding is the mental obstacles one must overcome to be successful. Overcoming exhaustion and tired limbs takes willpower that some people simply do not possess.
“Not everyone can do bodybuilding. It’s a lot of work,” she said Saturday at the 2012 Fouad Abiad Open , a Windsor competition that judges bodybuilding, muscularity, body condition, stage presence and personality.
For up to eight weeks prior to a contest, Dumas must cut dairy, salt, and sugar from her diet. She must grain her body two hours per day, lifting weights and extending her cardio without breaking down muscle.
Her diet consists of a half-cup of oatmeal in the morning, six ounces of chicken, half-cup of white rice, half-cup of broccoli, two protein shakes, and a tablespoon of peanut butter at night.
The hardest part of the diet, according to Dumas, is consistently consume flavorless food. Her one loopholes are mustard and table pepper. The former she tends to use almost too much, she admits.
“I don’t know how many jars of mustard I bought. Every time I went to the store people would stare at me carrying all this mustard.”
“People think there’s something wrong with you,” said Paul Lauzon, who promotes the show with professional bodybuilder Fouad Abiad, and has been competing in the industry for 21 years. “I think a lot of people think that bodybuilders are very vain people because it’s a selfish sport, but to excel at it you have to have that selfish kinds of outlook. I think people don’t realize how much dedication and discipline goes into this sport because it’s every day. There’s no off-season.”
Dumas admits that the final month before a competition is an emotional time for her.
“You kind of isolate yourself. You can’t go out, you can’t drink, you can barely keep your relationship alive. It’s that crazy.”
And yet, despite her wanting to quit at times, Dumas claims the end result is well worth the effort.
“That’s the reward I think because from that you might continue it as a lifestyle,” said the 114 pound brunette who had not drank water for the past 35 hours.
