Valletta, Malta -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/20/2013 -- Weight gain is a common problem millions of Americans today struggle with. Very few Americans have been successful at losing a desired amount of weight.
The main problem is that most cannot stick to a designated weight loss program. A general weight loss program includes both diet as well as exercise. Often times what happens is that the exercise may be too strenuous for people who are trying to lose weight, especially if these people are out shape.
Another problem is changing the old eating habits. In America you can’t walk a few metres without seeing a McDonald’s or other junk food establishment. For people who are so used to eating junk food, saying no to junk food is a very difficult task.
There are many factors that cause us to become fatter, yet three stand out from the rest:
- Our genetic make up: Every cell in our body has a central control panel, which is a nucleus that contains our genes and chromosomes. This is the instruction manual for our body which is inherited from our parents. It is this instruction manual that is largely responsible for how our bodies and our mind behave.
- The environment in which we live: Our personal environment may also contribute or cue us to adopt poor eating or exercise habits. This is especially true in today's society, which is dominated by speed and convenience. For example, escalators, elevators and remote-control appliances make us less physically active. Also the greater availability and the constant marketing of foods that are high in calories, fats and added sugars and also larger portion sizes promote unhealthy eating behaviours.
- Our lifestyle: What we eat and drink and how active we are. This is the gradual gain in weight as a result of eating food and not exercising enough.
The extent to which we can affect our genetic make up and our environment is limited. However, lifestyle is the area in which we can significantly manage and if need be, improve our body weight to ensure we maintain a healthy weight for our height, age and gender. This is why learning a healthy nutritious eating pattern and adopting it for life, that is, making a change of lifestyle, has a significant impact on our ability to reach and maintain a healthy weight.
There may also be personal reasons why one consumes a lot of unhealthy foods without being physically active enough. For example, feeling down, bored or depresses may cause some people to eat more food than they really need. Knowing the reasons why one may be consuming more calories that actually required is an important first step in changing the lifestyle habits to help one reach a healthy weight.
Gaining and losing weight works according to some a simple biological principle. When one consumes more energy in the form of food and drinks that the body uses each day, he or she will gain weight. When one consumes less energy in the form of food and drinks that the body requires each day, he or she will lose weight.
All in all, one must say that diets in themselves are not the proper way of losing weight. In the end, those who start dieting and give up in the end may end up fatter than before they started the diet in the first place. This may happen for two reasons, the first is that some people become depressed and start binge eating, or eating anything that comes their way. The second reason is that a diet may slow down the metabolism of the body and when this happens, the rate at which the body burns fat decreases. What one needs to do is to do a change of lifestyle and follow appropriate weight management programs.
