Founder of the Afrofuturism Network to Lead Talk on Black Super Heroes

William Jones will be discussing the Social, Cultural, and Political Analysis of Marvel’s Black Panther

 

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/14/2018 -- William Jones to speak on the recent national awareness and conversation sparked by Marvel's Black Panther. Jones will be analyzing the portrayal of black characters in the film and how this reflects cultural changes currently happening in America. He will also be looking at the effects of the growing movement behind this Marvel film and what it means for the future of black artists in comics, movies, and the Afrofuturism interest in the country.

The event will take place on March 8, 2018 at 3:45 PM at the School Without Walls located at 2130 G St NW, Washington, DC 20037.

The Afrofuturism Network supports the development and understanding of Afrofuturism, a "multi-media cultural genre that wields elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and even a little magic to address both the real-world issues facing black people in the present day and offer up a better way to see ourselves in the future, both in fiction and in reality." The Afrofuturism Network supports a variety of black artists while also analyzing how black characters are portrayed in these mediums.

The School Without Walls is located on the George Washington University campus and is a joint effort to benefit the community by providing students opportunities for success such as the ability for high school students to complete an associate's degree during their junior and senior year as full-time students at the university. The school prides itself on promoting "creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning, persistence, responsible global citizenship, and appreciation of excellence."
