San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/25/2013 -- French authorities have become concerned about the risk of Yaz side effects enough to ask the European Union to restrict the use of the birth control pills permanently. The new generation of birth control bills, which includes Yasmin, Yaz, and Ocella, have each been linked with an increased risk of vein thrombosis, as well as other health problems.

While the United States Food and Drug Administration have issued warnings regarding the products' side effects and associated risks, the contraceptives have yet to be pulled from stores in the country.

French authorities are not yet asking asking for the EU to recall the pills, according to Reuters. They are, instead, asking for the prescriptions guidelines to be altered, to recommend use only for women who cannot use any other form of contraceptives. The newer form of pills have been associate with blood clot creation, and the European Medicines Agency has stated that women who continue to use the contraceptives are at higher risk.

One study on the pills confirmed a link between the pills and venous thrombosis, according to the CMAJ. Research that has analyzed over 300,000 women in Israel was the noted group. They found the increase risk of the vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in women who used the pills, which contain drospirenone. The research noted that the risk was between a 43 and 65% increase in such concerns.

The risk is still considered low for the women who use the pills. An average of eight-to-10 blood closed per 10,000 women were noted each year. That number is still higher than the six blood clots that are noted in women who use other forms of contraceptives.

Researchers noted that the risk is most noted within the first three month of women discontinuing birth control was highest after the first month of use of such birth control.
