Community celebrates life cut short
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/02/2012 -- The funeral for 14-year-old Dajae Coleman drew hundreds at the First Church of God. The teen was recently killed by gunfire along Church Street, where a memorial now marks his passing.
“Why has this life touched so many of us,” said one speaker at the service. “Because it was beautiful life. I would like to say to the family, it's not easy to raise a beautiful child and you did.”
Twenty-year-old Wesley Woodson III is charged with first-degree murder in relation to Coleman’s death. Police say he mistook Coleman for another person when he fired his weapon.
“I hope by this incident that this community wakes up now, cause all these young kids are just getting killed for no reason,” said Xenia Roach, a friend of Dajae’s family.
LaRohn Bailey, Dajae’s cousin said “just to let people know he’s our little champion, no matter what. We’re not going to forget about him or nothing. He’s here, with us, no matter what.”
Dajae looked up to Lebron James and dreamed of being a sports star himself. James supported Dajae’s family on Twitter, as did the Celtic’s Paul Pierce and Tyson Chandler from the Knicks.
“You know what? This is a Dae Dae movement,” said Pastor Emmitt Williams.
“This is a movement. What kind of movement? A movement represented by a young man of character. It’s a show of support for a young man whose family played a big role in his life and whose loved extended well beyond their own home. Let us remember that this community is a great community, and while we’re mourning today and celebrating a beautiful life, we will do better and we thank Dae Dae for his life and for his leadership that will create a better community for all of us. So thank you, bless you. The thoughts of all of Evanston are with you.”
