Huntington Beach, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2013 -- General Motors had some big news in at the 2013 Consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. The company announced a new flexible application framework that will allow drivers to add apps and features to vehicles after the initial purchase.

GM, which already has begun to work with such partners as The Weather Channel, plans to debut new apps in some of its 2014 model year vehicles due out later this year. The Weather Channel app, for example, will show radar projection based on where the vehicle is currently located, hourly weather forecast and extended outlook.

Last weekend, GM sponsored a 36-hour "Hackathon" at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas where about 450 software developers worked round the clock to develop different apps. At the event the auto maker found about 10 to 15 potential leads.

Once GM picks and certifies an app, vehicle owners will be able to download the app to their smartphone. From there, they are loaded on the vehicle once the phone is linked to its infotainment console. The goal, however, is to bypass the smartphone and allow customers to download apps directly into their vehicles.

This is very exciting since this allows a set of API’s for developers allowing them to build upon the “infotainment” systems in GM vehicles. Being at the booth it was clear that this is the next leap forward for auto consumers. It was also clear that GM is slowly jumping into the whole APP developer deal, a lot of the guidelines for apps, and what information developers can access is still being reviewed.
