Expedia Inc. stock increased 16.49% to $59.70 after the company’s third-quarter profit dropped to $171.5 million or $1.20 per share from $209.5 million or $1.22 per share last year. Adjusted earnings rose to $1.32 per share from $1.28 per share a year ago. Income from discontinued operations for the quarter was $1.5 million compared to $38.6 million last year. Third-quarter revenues grew 17 percent to $1.20 billion from $1.02 billion last year. Analysts expected earnings of $1.26 per share on revenues of $1.17 billion for the quarter.

DeVry Inc. (NYSE:DV), the for-profit education company, posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on lower costs and strong enrollments at its healthcare colleges. DeVry Inc.(NYSE:DV) shares gained 25.50% to $26.12 in the opening session after the company posted well above analysts’ estimate profit. For the first quarter, the company posted net income of $31.99 million or $0.49 per share, from $57.48 million or $0.83 per share in the year-ago quarter. Total revenue for the quarter declined 7% to $482.74 million from $519.04 million in the same period last year. Analysts expected the company to earn $0.30 per share on revenue of $482.67 million

Verisign, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRSN) shares dropped 14.48% to $39.85 after the company’s third-quarter net income was $77.91 million or $0.47 per share, up from $58.92 million or $0.36 per share in the year-ago period. Adjusted net income was $84.05 million or $0.50 per share. Analysts expected the company to report earnings of $0.49 per share for the quarter. Revenues for the quarter grew 13 percent to $223.53 million from $196.97 million in the prior-year quarter. Analysts had a consensus revenue estimate of $223.56 million
