The Sex in the City but Poorer routines pays off
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/21/2013 -- While “Homeland” was the big winner of the night at the Golden Globes awards for television, on Sunday for a second season, the brash and unapologetic show “Girls” and its cast of New York 20-somethings took home the top comedy honor of the night.
“Homeland” won best drama, as well as best actor honors for Daman Lewis. The drama also won the award for best actress for Claire Danes in her role as a CIA agent who suffers from bipolar disorder.
“All of us killed ourselves to live up to the hype of the first season, and this tells me that maybe we did not screw this up,” said Alex Gansa, executive producer for the series that is in its second season on cable network Showtime.
“Homeland” had taken the best drama honor at the September Emmys, which is the top award in television, which ended the reign of AMC's long run with “Mad Men.
The Golden Globes, which are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for both film and television, took a separate path when it came to choosing HBO's “Girls” over “Modern Family” for best comedy. The latter had been slated as the almost sure-fire favorite.
Creator of the offbeat comedy “Girls”, Lena Dunahm, won the award for best actress in a comedy series.
The series had recently kicked off season two, tell the story of Dunham, who plays herself, and her three female friends in the Brooklyn area. She show revolves around them handing the difficulties of young-adult female life in the big city. Essentially its a funnier and poorer version of Sex in the City.
The show raised eyebrows with its nudity, graphic sex scenes, and its self-absorbed and generally privileged women, which is odd given Sex and the City was a big hit for over half a decade.
“I think when you get criticism, you have to be elegant about it and appreciate it and understand it,” said Dunham backstage, adding that “I’m sure people dislike the show for plenty of reasons.”
