Caretaker Changes Bathroom into a Haven
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2012 -- Hazel Chatman, a bathroom summer caretaker, did not want to work in a bathroom. Instead of changing jobs, she transformed the bathroom where she worked into a kitsch and warmth over the bathroom’s metal and tile foundation.
“I put my house here,” she said. “I make it nice. I have some incentive to come to work.”
The bathroom stands out because of its location: Brighton Beach, a beach where bathrooms are tiny and dirty.
People coming to the bathroom are usually surprised and shocked. Anne Hollande, a Parisian photographer is one of those people.
She says, “I never could imagine something so charming,” after stumbling on the bathroom during a walk down the boardwalk. “And it’s because of her. I never go to the bathroom in Coney Island because it’s crowded and dirty.”
Chatman pays for most of the decorations and she chooses them herself. She included four-rabbit family statues that were human-sized once only to have them stolen. Now, she pulls all the decorations down each night.
She lives alone in Coney Island, as her children are grown adults, and includes pictures of her family in her work place, as many of us do at our offices.
