Only 2% of couples have the woman significantly taller than the man
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/05/2013 -- According to a new study, a person's preference for a partner's height plays a major role in the mate-selection process.
Based upon the average heights of both men and women in Western nations, two of every 100 couples include a coupling that has a woman who is significantly taller than her partner. The actual frequency of these couples is apparently even lower than that, say Gert Stulp and his colleagues at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Their report was featured in an online journal, PloS One in mid-January.
There had been previous studies on the matter that found men do tend toward women who are shorter than themselves, and that women, in contrast, enjoy men who are taller. Yet, tall men and short women also seem to prefer a larger height difference when it came to their partner, while tall women and shorter men prefer only a slight difference in height.
There had been a previous study wherein these trends were analyzed only in terms of preference or expectation. According to the background informations in the journal, the new study looks at how the preferences affect decisions in a practical sense.
The analysis of more than 10,000 couples within the United Kingdom was able to note that the trends were evident and that the difference in height between the genders tended to be less than eight inches overall. That said, the patterns showed that couples were not as frequent as expected based upon the actual preferences of the previous research.
So, "while preferences for partner height generally translate into actual pairing, they do so only modestly," the study authors concluded.
