Transit riders can pick up packages at self service system
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/08/2012 -- High-tech parcel pickup kiosks designed by a Waterloo-based company were unveiled at five GO Transit locations in the Toronto area on Thursday.
The bright green kiosks, which are referred to as BufferBoxes and each contain 20 compartments, offer a simple and secure way to receive packages day or night.
The way it works is that customers are notified by email when their package is available are subsequently provided with a unique PIN code to retrieve their individual package.
BufferBox Inc. co-founder Mike McCauley said the kiosks eliminate the frustration of traveling to the post office as well as potentially having their packages stolen.
"It reverses the currently delivery model, where parcels wait for consumers instead of consumers waiting at home for parcels," said McCauley, who believes the BufferBox system could eliminate home delivery in the future.
GO Transit riders can now pick up their packages through the self-serve system at Union, Burlington, Oakville, Port Credit, and Clarkson stations.
McCauley, a University of Waterloo graduate, first tested the BufferBox at the university's Student Life Centre.
The main focus of the project is to better the GO Transit network, but McCauley said the company will also experiment with other locations where there is high pedestrian traffic, such as local convenience and grocery stores.
The company is set to install 21 kiosks around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas by the end of the year. The goal is to have nearly 100 more by the end of next year.
McCauley estimates that the price will range from $3 to $5 per package in the future, but until the end of this year, customers can try it free of charge.
