Altria Group Inc (NYSE:MO) stock dropped 0.48% to $35.08. The company on Sept. 24 said a California Superior Court issued a ruling in favor of the tobacco giant, rejecting plaintiffs' efforts to impose a fine due to alleged false advertising on "Lights" cigarettes.
The plaintiffs claimed in a lawsuit originally filed in June 1997 that Altria's Philip Morris USA unit violated state law by using the terms "Lights" and "Lowered Tar and Nicotine" on cigarette packages. Altria said plaintiffs sought to recover some money paid by California smokers who purchased Marlboro Lights between 1998 and 2001.
Additionally, the company on Sept. 16 raised its full-year profit outlook, a rosier view attributed to a credit the tobacco company expects to receive tied to an arbitration panel ruling involving several U.S. states.
The company said it expects to record an increase of $145 million in reported pre-tax earnings for the third quarter related to the credit. As a result, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes now expects reported full-year profit between $2.57 to $2.62 a share, above the prior outlook of $2.51 to $2.56 in earnings. The adjusted profit guidance was reaffirmed on Monday.
