Innovative Vertebral Augmentation Relieves Compression Fracture Pain

Kayal Pain & Spine Center surgeons are masters of minimally invasive techniques

Franklin Lakes, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2019 -- Compression fractures of the spine are often painful and disabling, but the elite surgeons at Kayal Pain & Spine Center have the superior skills to provide patients with immediate relief.

This team has perfected vertebral augmentation, a minimally invasive spine surgery technique available in Westwood, Franklin Lakes and Glen Rock.

Those who suffer from osteoporosis and other bone-weakening conditions are vulnerable to compression fractures of the vertebrae, the small bones of the backbone. The team at Kayal Pain & Spine Center first explores noninvasive treatments, such as bed rest, back bracing, physical activity and analgesic pain medication, for compression fractures. But if those options are ineffective, this elite team may recommend vertebral augmentation.

During this minimally invasive procedure, cement is used to repair the compression fractures in the vertebrae. The surgeons at Kayal Pain & Spine use a live X-ray to guide a needle into the vertebra. It only takes about six minutes for the cement to harden, so the procedure is fairly quick. A local or general anesthetic is administered to prevent pain.

Vertebral augmentation is most often used to address bone deficiencies caused by osteoporosis. However, it also can be an effective approach to problems caused by cancer and other bone-weakening conditions. There are three types:

1. Kyphoplasty: A catheter-like device (bone tamp) is inserted into the collapsed vertebra. A balloon at the distal end is inflated to create a hollow cavity in the middle of the bone. The balloon is deflated and the bone tamp is removed. Cement is then injected into the cavity, hardening to create a cast inside the vertebra.

2. Vertebroplasty: Although this procedure is similar to kyphoplasty, it does not involve a balloon. The needle is used to inject the cement, which spreads to fill cracks and weakened areas. As the cement hardens, it glues the vertebra back together.

3. Sacroplasty: Cement is injected into the sacrum—the triangular bone in the lower back—instead of the vertebra.

Most patients enjoy immediate pain relief and can go home the same day as the procedure. In a matter of days, they can return to normal routines.

Numerous Advantages
Because vertebral augmentation is minimally invasive, healing and recovery are faster. There are no sutures or stitches. A small bandage covers the injection site and bracing is not necessary. There is minimal or no scarring.

This procedure can control pain and strengthen the spine. The team at Kayal Pain & Spine has watched many patients enjoy happier, more active lives after undergoing vertebral augmentation.
