Israeli Documentaries Vie for Oscar Award Reports Alluc

Jewish talents and Israeli non-fiction projects line the list of Oscar hopefuls

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2013 -- The 85th Academy Awards list of nominees has a large assortment of Israeli and Jewish names to it, as a number of Jewish entertainers and two Israeli documentaries are among the list of hopefuls.

Steven Spielberg, who is nominated for Best Director for the eighth time in his long and storied career, is entered for the movie Lincoln. The movie has been nominated for 12 total Oscars.

Daniel Day-Lewis, who portrait the truly historic president has already earned himself numerous plaudits, and was nominated as Best Lead Actor. It marks his fifth nomination, he has won twice in the past. Once for the movie My Left Foot, and the his second Oscar came for his chilling portrayal in There Will Be Blood.

Alan Arkin has received a nomination nod for Best Supporting Actor for Argo. He won the 2006 award for the Best Supporting Actor for his character in Little Miss Sunshine.

David O'Russell was also nominated, and for the second year in a row, for directing Silver Linings Playbook. He was nominated last year for his direction of The Fighter.

Benh Zietlin was nominated for the directing of Bests of Southern Wild. It is his first feature film.

The documentaries 5 Broken Cameras and The Gatekeeper were each shortlisted as Best Documentary for this years awards. The former details a farmer from Palestinian as he struggles against the Israeli army. The latter film looks into the sexual assault cases of the U.S. Military, which was produced by British Jewish film producer Teddy Leifer.

Spielberg, Day-Lewis, Arkin were all previously nominated for Golden Globes within the same respective categories. The Golden Globes are set to air on Sunday, while the Oscars are set to be presented on February 24.
