San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2013 -- While the many London designers are known for their somewhat rebellious nature, the Milan Fashion Week provides Italians with an opportunity to show they can make a collective statement as well. The bi-annual event within Italy's second city coincided with the country heading to the polls and electing a new leader. The elections are being held amidst a large and bitter battle over how to handle the financial woes of the country, that have been experienced over the previous years.

Although the result remains inconclusive, the political future of the country is simply all-over uncertain. Meanwhile, designers have a way to return to the boom-days of yesteryear.

There is a general sense of optimism that is manifested within the catwalk, primarily through the almost gratuitous use of furs for clothing from Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld led the charge for the use of animal material, which is still regarded as rather controversial amongst the countries like the United States and England, but remains rather commonplace within Italy. Collections such as Fendi were utilizing mink and fox for items that went beyond simple clothing and extended to accessories.

Fur also played a large role at Marni. The brand most known for receiving a cash injection from Renzo Rosso, also utilized fur quite liberally. The company that has a signature of intrinsic connectivity to print decided to showcase a small selection of patterns from designer Consuelo Castiglioni.

“Textures and fabrics as always are key,” said Castiglioni of this new direction, which also experimented with volume and proportion.

Dolce & Gabbana steered clear of fir, but was in no means flexing its sense of austerity. Instead, they utilized the riches of the Catholic heritage of Byzantine and Monreale gilded mosaics, which were printed and then embellished with sequinsing patterns, as well as beads and jewels. With news of the Pope's resignation having been so sudden, it was a smart of noteworthy irony that the clothing should take on such a style.
