Kelechi Okereke's New Song and His Life in London

The Sea Between Us makes waves in the industry

London, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/28/2019 -- Kelechi Okereke's new solo song The Sea Between Us, a part of the sound track to his co-written play Leave To Remain is hitting all the right notes with the audiences.

Cowritten with Matt Jones, The Bloc Party frontman's play opened at the Lyric Hammersmith in London on 18th January. The new age love story focusses on Obi and Alex, a gay couple in London. When visa issues confront, they have to consider the option of marriage, but it also means taking a closer look at their relationship. There are external factors including the family and the past that have to be taken into account as well.

The story is truly the tale of modern times, thoughtfully written making it a relatable story about two people in love. Kelechi Okereke's song perfectly complements the emotions played out on stage and the gamut of feelings the lead characters are going through. The lead singer of Bloc Party has clearly brought his A game to the song, which has had a profound impact on the listeners.

Being the co-writer of the play has also probably helped him feel deeply for the characters and their anguish, which is reflected in the soulful The Sea Between Us. Kelechi Okereke talks about the inspiration not only for the music but the play too when he says, "Leave To Remain is the story of what happens when a marriage forces two very different families to come together."

Of course, the artist's background had a part to play in the composition. Speaking of the influences for the song he reveals, "I have taken cues for records, mostly West African High-life music, my parents used to play when I was growing up. Those sounds have been combined with electronic dance music of today to create something that represents both the worlds for me."

It's interesting to note that this is the first musical that he has written. The artist has always talked about being authentic and original in his work, which is exactly what you see in the play as well as the song. Kelechi Okereke admits that the exciting part about writing is not knowing where it can go and exploring new territories. The Sea Between Us is a breakthrough that is charting its path in unexplored waters.
