Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/15/2014 -- Ketoprofen is another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce pain and fevers caused by bacterial and viral infections. It can be used to manage both short-term and chronic pain in dogs and cats. Horses that have soft-tissue injury, synovitis (inflammation of fluid in the joints) and colic that could lead to bacteria releasing toxins that promote inflammation are treated with ketoprofen to reduce the pain and inflammation that occurs. Horses are given an injection intravenously and should not be given for more than five days.
As with most NSAIDs, gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration is a common side effect and drugs that protect the lining of the GI (sucralfate, cimetidine, omeprazole, misoprostol or ranitidine) are given concurrently with ketoprofen. The GI bleeding can lead to anemia. Liver and kidney damage can occur due to the drug.Denamarin Do give ketoprofen to animals on another NSAID or corticosteroids and animals that are allergic to aspirin.
