An established Birmingham-business has suggested that people should look at the latest figures on employment and investment to get the true picture of Birmingham.Baker Goodchild spoke at the end of a week in which Birmingham has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Birmingham, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/24/2014 -- Birmingham-based Direct Mail specialist Baker Goodchild have been established in the city since 1995 and have seen a massive expansion of the business over those two decades – with staffing levels increasing almost every year. MD Lorraine Burnell said this week “We are really proud to be a Birmingham-based company and we draw most of our staff and Apprentices from the local area. In a week when the spotlight has been on the negative we want to say that Birmingham is full of success stories like our own – the result of local talent and hard work.”
Whilst the national media has been focusing on the aftermath of reports into the ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation into some Birmingham schools, there was plenty of good news from the Second City. Unemployment in the West Midlands has decreased by 19,000 in the quarter to April, official figures have revealed. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a total of 203,000 people were unemployed in the region between February and April 2014. The region's unemployment rate was 7.5 per cent and saw a drop of 8.6 per cent during the period. Commenting on the figures for the West Midlands, employment minister Esther McVey said "The unemployment rate in the West Midlands fell 1.9 percentage points on the year - the largest fall of all UK regions.”
And in further good news it was reported this month that foreign investment in Birmingham created a record 4,400 jobs over the past year, as international firms sought to take advantage of the area’s talent pool and manufacturing expertise. The jobs boost, which will add £362m to the economy, is an increase of 78pc compared to the previous year’s total, according to the area’s marketing board Marketing Birmingham.
Baker Goodchild works across a wide range of sectors including printing, advertising, leisure & education, the arts and local authorities. The company currently provides a range of services including Direct Mail fulfillment, national and international postage services, personalisation and data processing.
Lorraine continued “The employment and investment figures are proof of the city’s continued growth and development. It is a young city with under 25’s accounting for nearly 40% of its population and continues to outperform much of the rest of the country. Whilst we should not dismiss any problems it’s equally important to focus on the positive aspects of Birmingham, too.”
