Nu-Metal band hit one billion views, becoming the first rock band ever to reach the mark
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/27/2012 -- The record mark was hit on The LinkinParkTV YouTube channel. The track “New Divide” had over 131 million views. The achievement comes on the heels of ‘Living Things’, the new album released by Linkin Park in late June. It marked their fifth full-length album.
Second and third on the list of overall rock band views were the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day. Neither band was within half of Linkin Park’s record number. RHCP had 327 million views, while Green Day sits at 245 million on their channel.
Lady Gaga hit one billion in 2010. Justin Bieber currently has 2.8 billion views. Rihanna also has surged ahead of Gaga within the recent quarter.
Mike Shinoda denied reports the band were returning to the nu-metal sound that made them so famous. When asked about the new record, Shinoda stated: "That's actually been misinterpreted. What we've actually said is that the record gets back to our roots and it's captured a feeling that we haven't gone after in many years. I think that's gone misconstrued as a return to heavy guitars. There are guitars on the record of course though."
When questioned on whether or not the album was thus experimental like their fourth album ‘A thousand Suns’, Shinoda said:
"I'll say it like this, with 'Minutes To Midnight' and even more so with 'A Thousand Suns', we were making an effort to get away from the sound of the first two records. The reason for that was that we felt if we made a third record that sounded that way, we'd be pigeonholed into doing that forever. Everybody just gravitated towards the stuff that sounded different and, as we got into 'A Thousand Suns', it got even more different."
