San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/28/2012 -- The coupon industry has been helping people keep their grocery bills under control for many years. However, it has come to the attention of some that the industry aims to target more unhealthy types of food.

Though the founder of Linkwell Health knows that Americans, especially those ridden with health diseases, should consume more healthy foods, the company continues to promote frozen entrees and diet soda than fresh produce.

Coupons are utilized by many Americans. It is noted that more than 80% of Americans reported to using coupons regularly. With 2011 being a continuation of a bad economic situation, more than $4.5 billion worth of coupons were redeemed. That number constitutes a 12% rise over 2010. Most of those coupons ended up in the Sunday papers, which were geared toward unhealthful foods such as soda, chips, and snack foods.

Over the past few years, Linkwell partnered with 20 health plans in order to collaborate and get more healthy foods added as coupons. Linkwell also supports pilot programs wherein grocery stores make an effort to offer discounts on things like fresh produce and seafood. Though some people disagree with some of the products that make the “healthful” food list, like packaged deli meats and butter spreads, Linkwell has created a criteria in which the foods must meet.

Health insurers have taken a great liking to the program, as it is an easy way to get consumers to work towards a healthier lifestyle. It also sends an encouraging message to the customers to read through their health-care plan information booklet. They offer free coupons through a quarterly mass-mailing and also offer free downloads online.

The goal of the program is to get people to take control of their own health and make sure that they are leading a healthy life. Health care can be quite confusing to just about everyone, but coupons and saving money is something everyone understands.
