Liposuction vs. Fat Transfer: More Women Inject Fat Than Have It Removed in 2012

Beverly Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/28/2013 -- A BBC article dated January 27, 2013 shows how the number of women in the U.K. getting fat injected has exceeded the count of those who are getting fat removed from their body. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that the number of people in the United Kingdom getting fat transfer procedures has increased by 10 percent, whereas the same amount of decrease has been seen on the volume of people getting fat sucked out of their bodies through liposuction.

A fat transfer procedure involves taking fat from one part of the body and putting it in another location, still inside the body. The face would be the most common fat transfer destination among patients. In most cases, two treatments would be performed over a six-month time period for results to be apparent. The procedure is a progressive process, hence results are not instantaneous.

Dr. Ourian finds these statistics interesting, yet he believes that these numbers do not necessarily reflect how aesthetic medicine practices are doing in the U.S. “Personally,” the Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills added, “I believe far more of our patients are inclined towards liposuction rather than fat transfer.”

The aforementioned report also stated that the number of people getting tummy tucks has decreased by over 10 percent. Procedures for the face lies on the other side of the spectrum, with increases on eyelid surgeries, facelifts, and brow lifts at 13%, 14%, and 17% respectively. The president of the association which did the report believes that people’s choosing to lose fat the traditional way by going to the gym could be the reason behind the decreased interest in liposuction in the UK.

Dr. Ourian also believes that there are a number of other factors that contribute to the decrease in liposuction interest. “Even though people still value having a thin body, many others would rather have a curvy figure. Kim Kardashian’s popularity can attest to that,” says the Beverly Hills-based cosmetic dermatologist.

Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer in laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for the correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, skin discoloration, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, cellulite, and others.
