Hytrol, world leader in the design and manufacturing of advanced conveyor systems and integration partner, Advanced Equipment Company (AEC) recently helped Morinaga America's Mebane, NC candy manufacturing facility. The company needed to design its new conveying and packaging lines. AEC's challenge was to develop a system that would convey the product from the bagging machines into the check-weighing system which would verify the weight of the bags. From there, the bags of candy were conveyed to an operator station where operators manually unloaded the bags from an upper belt conveyor into display boxes in cartons below on an accumulating conveyor.

The Wall Street Journal report quoted Gregg Goodner, current board member and past president of Hytrol, one of the largest manufacturers of industrial conveyors in the America. Goodner commented that a growing number of companies are looking to increase their use of robotics and automation.

Hytrol announced that Bill Maple was recently named Director of Software Solutions. In this new position, Maple will lead Hytrol's Pivot Warehouse Control System and other software offerings. Hoj Innovations, Hytrol's integration partner, worked with Backcountry to develop a unique solution capable of providing an increase in their logistic footprint and fulfillment space, while reducing processing costs and shipping expenses. The system is comprised of several customized applications, one of which provides a noteworthy approach to the traditional "pick and pass" order fulfillment process. This solution utilizes an overhead conveyor spine to vertically sort product to the three levels of the pick module. This allows the main conveyor line to transport customer-order totes only, while replenishment and empty totes are transported directly to their specified zone.

Boyce Bonham, director of integrated systems and controls at Hytrol, noted that 24-volt conveyors can accurately process orders through distribution centers in less space than traditional high voltage systems. And, if designed properly, these conveyors can be very efficient in space utilization, while conveying—and even sorting—up to 50 cartons per minute.
