Manufacturers and distributors are frequently nervous about running out of stock, and tempted to overstock. Holding excess stock is not a lean practice and highly inefficient. Overstocking tempts employees to make Errors, due to the overage. Start with a decent projection of sales and tracking software to help calculate the rate of product turnover. This helps manage inventory risk and reduce overstocking. Either that, or, use a Bill of Materials that spells out what is required for the project. Forecast errors can be avoided by monitoring real-time inventory data. This is one of many features appearing in Forecast Errors Newsletter.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the manufacturing industry saw middle management hollowed out and was introduced to part-time/contract labor forces, and the replacement of routine work by robots, software and outsourcing. Factories were left with a smaller set of "knowledge workers" — the ones who could think for themselves as well as use their intuition and personal skills. Since then, those skilled workers that remained "aged out" and retired. Onboarding new replacement manufacturing labor teams requires a different set of requirements, especially as those under 30 are used to constant feedback and recognition for work performed.

It also includes illustrative case studies from Avon, Ford, Xerox, True Value Hardware, and others, which show how today most innovative logistics and supply chains managers are arriving at proven solutions to a wide variety of warehousing challenges. Not long ago, effective warehousing was a relatively straightforward progression of receiving, storing, and shipping. But in the age of e-commerce, supply chain integration, globalization, and just-in-time processing, warehousing has become more complex than at any time in the past — not to mention more costly.

More than half (55%) of shoppers now use mobile devices to research products in store and nearly a forth (21%) have purchased a product via smartphone while browsing it in the store, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by SecureNet. This points to a growing trend in buyers who prefer to use both platforms to make their purchasing decisions.

In a recent webinar, participants were asked, "How accurate do you think the forecast for your company usually is?" With 54% of the respondents claiming less than 60% forecast accuracy, it is not surprising supply chain professionals have to spend a large portion of the day making additional corrective action spreadsheets and providing them to suppliers. Supply chain professionals in the automotive, aerospace, medical devices, electronic components, fitness equipment, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries were also asked how to improve forecast accuracy within the company. Two choices, "changing production to a demand-driven model" and "implementing a pull process," (33% combined), though not a majority, bodes well for the future of manufacturing. This is one of many features appearing in Forecast Errors Newsletter. Each week features two to four topics with fresh interesting information.

This week in System Integration News included the Pennsylvania state Liquor Control Board's record $2.24 billion in revenue was driven by strong wine sales, revamped state stores and improvements in operations, according to the agency's annual report. The annual report — the second put out by the agency after years without one — showed retail wine and spirits sales grew 3.7 percent in the 2013-14 fiscal year, with Chairman's Selection wine sales increasing 5.6 percent. Last year, the agency opened 10 new stores, remodeled 15 and enlarged the store at 5956 Penn Circle South in Pittsburgh's Shadyside by 35 percent. The 17,000-square-foot mega-outlet, the largest in the state, opened in August. To date, 62 stores have been revamped, and six are under renovation, the report shows. The revamped stores feature a new layout, expanded wine and liquor selections, and updated flooring, lighting and other fixtures. On average, customers spend between 10 percent and 30 percent more money in those stores compared to the older versions, said spokeswoman Stacy Kriedeman.
