Libraries closing at record pace as book giveaway organization has funding cut
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/24/2013 -- McDonald continues to respond to parents' interests for more books by launching a 24-month plan and subsequent campaign in order to “hand out more than 15 million children's books by the end of 2014” with £1 book offer on its latest Happy Meal boxes.
The National Literacy Trust back the “Happy Readers” organization that allows customers to purchase books for £1. The deal will be featured on Happy Meal boxes up to the end of 2014.
The strategy was created with DK's Amazing World series, but McDonald's stated that they will work with other publishers as well, as the goal is to promote reading and literacy, rather than specific partnerships.
There is a one-month pilot session at the start of 2012 in order to test the level of positive reaction from parents and children alike.
The scheme is coming up at a time when more libraries are shutting their doors, and Boojstart, which is a charity that provides free books for children has had its funding cut by 50%. In that sense, the partnership is helping show that at least someone is still keeping the promotion of books and reading a priority.
Bookstart secured funding up through 2015, but Viv Bird, Chief Executive stated that “significant reductions in central funding” would mean that the charity will be forced to make “tough decisions” regarding the general shape and capacity of its book gifting programs.
"We are pleased that we have been able to safeguard the core book gifting offer, so that every child has access to books at key stages of their development," she added.
Over 200 libraries closed in the 2012 fiscal year. That tally is over 50 more than in 2010 or 2011, according to the annual report from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. There are now 4,265 libraries, and those who champion the structures are fighting foreclosures at every turn.
