Stoney Creek and Binbrook see flooding and backed up sewer after warm Sunday
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2013 -- Two councilors of the Hamilton city council want the city to begin an investigation of areas of Binbrook and Stoney Creek that have continually been hit by flooding. The latest flooding occurred over the recent weekend.
Ward 9's Brad Clark, and Ward 11's Brenda Johnson will be introducing motions to get the city a third-party for a peer review of the area's wards. There is set to be a planning committee held soon.
“We're planning to ask for a peer review on three separate neighborhoods to see whether the storm management ponds are holding up (and) whether the pipes are holding up,” Johnson said on Monday.
The population in the Stoney Creek area is growing quickly, according to Clark, and he wants someone to examine the safety and security of the city's stormwater system capacities.
“Let's make sure those original grading plans for stormwater management plans are working,” he said.
Both of the councilors have been nearly overrun with calls about the thawing snow and resulting flooding due to warming temperatures. Johnson stated he received 70 complaints from residents with flooded yards and basements.
On McNeilly Road, “14 homes got flooded out,” Johnson said. “When I drove down there, I was afraid my car would stall. It was just amazing.”
In total, over 130 calls from residents regarding the flooding came through over the recent weekend. Many of those who were affected likely did not make calls, stated Dan McKinnon, who believes the situation was likely even worse than the calls may lead one to believe.
“We're not entirely sure what percentage of basement floods get reported to us.”
nearly 50% of the calls were regarding floods caused by groundwater, while the other half were in regards to backed-up sewers, McKinnon stated.
