JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) shares dropped 0.02% to $52.51. The company on Oct. 11 said it took a $7.2 billion (4.5 billion pounds) hit from litigation expenses and posted its first quarterly loss since 2004. The company reported a loss of $380 million, or 17 cents per share, for the third quarter. A year earlier it posted a profit of $5.71 billion, or $1.40 a share.
JPMorgan's chief financial officer, Marianne Lake, said legal expenses would not affect stock repurchase plans and that the bank "has every intention to pay our dividends."
Even beyond the litigation expenses, the third-quarter results were less than spectacular, with revenue declining 8 percent to $23.9 billion - about in line with forecasts - as fee income and lending income both fell.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) shares gained 1.06% to $17.11. The Board of Directors of Ford Motor on Oct. 10 declared a fourth quarter dividend of $0.10 per share on the company's outstanding Class B and common stock. This is the same level of dividend paid in the first, second and third quarters of 2013 and double the amount paid in the same quarter last year. The fourth quarter dividend is payable on Dec. 2, 2013 to shareholders of record on Nov. 1, 2013.
Additionally, the company on Oct. 8 said it is poised to overtake its Japanese rivals on the top seller's list in China as Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Honda Motor Co (7267.T) struggle to regain market share following a flare up in anti-Japanese sentiment a year ago.
