Reverend states its within the teachings of the faith
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2013 -- There was a large step taken toward the right for Americans within same-sex relationships, as the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Announced they will begin to perform same sex weddings. According to the Associated Press, the church officials will announce Wednesday that the facility will perform the sacred rights of marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender members.
The Washington National Cathedral, or cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, is known to many Americans as the church wherein the national ceremonies are held. Such events are funerals for Presidents and other highly prominent figures, as well as the inaugurations of four former presidents. Now, the church is to become a forerunner in the debate on same sex marriage, which continues to be a decisive issue in the country.
LGBT couples are considered equal under the law in most aspects of American life; however, one right that has continued to elude them is the the right to have marriage, and the important caveats that follow. As of January, 2013, only nine states will have fully legalized same-sex marriage.
American has found its way through many embattled factors of the issue throughout its history, dating back to the Stonewall Riots in 1969. Despite the obvious progress of the pro-gay movement, there are still many who are unwilling to change the particular rules pertaining to marriage, as they feel it undercuts the importance of the term and of the union.
While those who oppose same sex marriage will continue to hold to those beliefs, (no matter how out of favor), and the LGBT community continues to attempt to rip the term from the clutches of religious individuals (no matter how unimportant a word is in itself once all right are granted).
Reverend Hall and the church he works under have been at the forefront of the debate for some time. He sees the right for same sex couples to marry as both principled and within the spirit of the faith:
“As a kind of tall-steeple, public church in the nation’s capital, by saying we’re going to bless same-sex marriages, conduct same-sex marriages, we are really trying to take the next step for marriage equality in the nation and in the culture.”
“For us to be able to say we embrace same-sex marriage as a tool for faithful people to live their lives as Christian people. For us to be able to say that at a moment when so many other barriers toward full equality and full inclusion for gay and lesbian people are falling, I think it is an important symbolic moment.”
