New Law Makes It Easier to Understand Flood Coverage

Now that 2019 is here, several new Florida laws are in effect. A new homeowners’ insurance makes some stipulations current and future homeowners may wish to familiarize themselves with.

Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/07/2019 -- HB 1011 has become law and it details a pivotal note regarding residential property insurance as well as flood insurance. The law explains that should a homeowner not purchase flood insurance separately through something like the National Flood Insurance Program or an authorized Florida flood insurer, then coverage will not be provided for any damage that is caused as a result of a flood.

A homeowners typically run into is buying an insurance policy but failing to realize that the expensive premium they have agreed to pay does not include coverage should a flood occur. Most insurance companies will not provide flood insurance, or coverage. For homeowners that are not legally required to have flood insurance coverage, this realization may arrive after it's too late to do anything.

With these 2019 Florida laws that have gone into effect, insurance policies are required to clearly state that flood damage is not covered, which may go a long way in cutting down on expensive surprises for homeowners that do not know they must purchase a separate policy for floods.
