New Life-Jacket and Police Behavior Laws to Take Effect in Nigeria Reports Redningsvest

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/28/2012 -- The Lagos State council has bolstered its readiness to enforce life-jacket mandates for all boat users following a boat mishap in their waters which claimed lives.

Five individuals drowned last month when a boat ferrying passengers from Oluwo, Tot-Awori Local Council Development Area capsized.

Kayode Robert, who chairs the council, stated that the enforcement of life-jackets and their use by passengers has reached an imperative measure in the wake of the lost lives. He noted that the plan to enforce life-jackets by passengers.

Robert laid blame on the passengers on the boat for failing to wear life-jackets which were afforded to them. According to Robert, the use of the jackets would have reduced the casualty figure. He also noted that the council would provide more life-jackets to residents in the riverside area, making an effort to ensure persons use them while on board various vessel types.

In the meantime, the Nigerian Police have set forth new rule sets which aim to regulate police officer while both on and off duty.

A statement was signed by Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba stated that a “special code of conduct and professional standards for officers of the Nigeria Police Force” and will be set and collated under leadership of the current inspector General of Police.

According to Mba, the code contains standard policing rules, as well as international practices in enforcement as made available in United Nation Conventions. It also will aim to follow the guidelines followed by the Nigeria constitution, as well as the Police Act and Regulations and other domestic statues.

The measure is intended to be utilized by police to determine the proper course of action, while the code is designed to promote efficiency and effectiveness in regards to policing. Effectiveness includes the transparency, accountability, and civilian oversight on police activities.
