Washington warned people of the new scam as the callers try to act as state agents
Hood River, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/15/2012 -- Washington is warning residents about a new phone scam. It is said that this new scam is specially targeted toward senior citizens of Washington State.
They stated that the scam callers pose themselves as state agents and try to sell reverse mortgages as part of a tax relief program. It has also been reported that solicitors claim to be from the organization called “Senior First”, which clearly indicated that this scam is being targeted towards the senior state citizens.
According to a report, the State Department of Revenue received several calls from many senior citizens within a week as a result of the scam and reported that, a solicitor from “Senior First” has contacted them.
A revenue department program specialist, Peggy Davis, wrote a notification in an email to the state county assessors that, “As a lead-in to selling their product, the solicitor asks for personal information such as employment status, income and age, under the guise of attempting to help the senior determine whether they qualify for our state’s property tax relief program or for aid and assistance programs for veterans,” according to loan safe.
Law enforcement officials in Whitman County have jumped into the situation and have said that, though they haven’t been reported of any such scam that is targeting anyone loyally, but advice residents to contact police immediately upon receiving any suspicious call like these.
Sheriff Brett Myers said, “If you do get a call, it’s good to call us because if we end up getting five, six or seven calls in a couple days, and if they’re similar, we’ll notify the public.”
Myers also suggested that people should always try and avoid all those calls that brings offers that are good and especially those calls that prompts personal information over the phone. He also suggested that one should always try to ask the caller to identify themselves before giving any information and one should be very clear at the same very moment in case if the caller refuses to give information, which most likely mean that there is something wrong.
