While local newspaper continue to insist there is a large skills gap between its citizens, a new study suggests there isn’t.
San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/17/2013 -- Yesterday, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had a front page story on the the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, claiming it is working to attack “the region’s skills gap”, the alleged mismatch between the skills of area workers and the jobs employers need to fill.
However, many citizens, including academic researchers, suggest no gap exists and believe companies simply refuse to pay a competitive wages to their employees. Hardly any of the research done by social scientists has made it into the newspaper, yet, the Journal Sentinel began to give some ground on the issue in the totally opposite direction.
In a report published in August of 2012, Bucyrus International CEO Tim Sullivan wrote a long letter to Gov. Scott Walker that suggested the state’s education system needed to be changed to address the issue of a “skills gap”. The Journal Sentinel featured a few pieces on the report paying much attention to the skills gap aspect. Yet, when a study was released in February 2013 by UW-Milwaukee researcher Marc Levine that seemed to discredit the “skills gap” theory in Wisconsin, the JS offered no news coverage or editorial discussion.
A new study by the LaFollette Institute concluded there was little evidence of a skills gap in Wisconsin. The report got some coverage in the Business Journal and Madison’s Cap Times, but there was no apparently no room to discuss it in The Journal Sentinel reporter John Schmid’s 1,300 word, 35 paragraph story.
