In the light of the new government study commissioned to examine the perceived dangers sky lanterns pose to livestock, plants and the environment.
North Yorkshire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/13/2013 -- They may be a splendid sight as they drift off into the night sky, but the party could be ending soon for sky lanterns, more specifically the wire-based type, as they are deemed dangerous and environmentally-unfriendly. Although most lantern retailers claim their products are biodegradable, the potential threat of Chinese sky lanterns on the environment, livestock and crops is to be explored by a governmental inquiry commissioned by new farming minister David Heath, which could lead the way to restricted us or even a ban.
Commenting on the recent news regarding DEFRA’s initiative, founder of Night Sky Lanterns Lewis Sellers said: "A ban, or partial ban, is completely unnecessary in my opinion, provided a minimum standard for quality is introduced. There are too many poor quality lanterns on the market, which reflect badly on companies such as ourselves.
We are constantly working to improve our Sky Lanterns, and are more than willing to cooperate with ADAS and DEFRA and would welcome a ban on wire based Sky Lanterns. Our company has supplied high quality wire free Chinese Lanterns for over 2 years now and we would urge other suppliers to do the same."
Farmers were the first to voice an opinion of the possible dangers of Chinese lanterns, which are extensively used at weddings, celebrations and festivals, complaining that, once the lanterns land on the ground, the wire used to support the fuel, can end up chopped up into silage and be eaten by cattle. In addition to the danger posed by sky lanterns to livestock, farmers also want to raise awareness of the fact that a lit lantern could ignite entire crops during dry weather.
The governmental study will assess the impact sky lanterns have on livestock, crops and the environment, but also learn what countries are doing to address concerns and limit the dangers they pose. The study will also look into the value of the market for sky lanterns in the United Kingdom.
Night Sky Lanterns is a specialist lantern company only offering lanterns that are fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly. All of their products are manufactured from organic and sustainable materials, and pose no danger or hazard to wildlife or the environment.
